Vacation Time 2013!

We arrived back home from Ocracoke this past Saturday night after a week there with our family of 4, 2 friends of our daughters, and Bodo, the Golden Retriever.  I had planned to update this blog while I was there, but the thought of burying my head in a computer screen, even for a few minutes a day, seemed unacceptable to me. My eyes were constantly drawn to the beautiful views outside in the marsh and canal off our dock, and I didn’t want to miss a thing!

We had a mama duck with 7 ducklings swimming up and down the canal past our dock all week. Sometimes we would pass them waddling in a yard up the street on our way to the village. They were so cute. The geese were prevalent last week, as were white herons. While kayaking through the canals, we approached a huge heron who allowed us to get about 3 feet from him, dove his elegant neck into the water to catch a fish, then took off in a flutter and flurry of wings into the trees by the canal. He really was not afraid.

The weather was a bit disappointing, but then it has been everywhere this summer.  Less beach time, more relaxation, but that’s a good thing. My hubby did take his tools after all, and was able to get multiple projects done no matter the weather. I’ve decided to let him be who he is: an accomplisher, a project man, a “Doer of All Things Well”. I recently read that some people are very mechanical; some very analytical. That describes the two of us well and you really can’t have one without the other!

Bodo, the Golden Retriever, lost his privilege of going to the beach in the future. We should have started him out there as a pup, not a 5 year old, set in his ways, dog.  He really wasn’t happy there, out of his element, so next year he’ll go back to doggy camp where he can be happy and safe. We tried boat riding with him, swimming off the dock with him, chasing the waves with him, sleeping with him, etc. A dream come true vacation for most any other Golden.  He just couldn’t relax and enjoy any of it! (I won’t go into any ugly details about his adventures).

Let’s see, overall, we kayaked, biked, listened to local music, walked, played on the beach, slept on the beach, went boat riding, fished, ate the best seafood on earth, drank some really fun drinks, laid in the sun, ate more seafood, shopped, read, completed projects on the house, ate more seafood, watched a couple of movies, took in some sunsets, had the neighbor in for dinner, and did I say, ate seafood???

Momma duck and her little ducklings.

The frogs are some of my favorite things on the island! They’re really cute and make the most amazing sounds at night in the marsh.

This is the remains of an old canning factory in the harbor (oysters, I think). I’m fascinated by the fact that it’s still there!  The remains have been there since long before we started going to Ocracoke!

One of the fishing expeditions last week. One Spanish Mackeral was kept. The other thrown back.

One of our favorite shops. Did I say we like seafood?

Bodo, the Golden Retriever, checking things out on the dock.

This is the band, Molasses Creek, a local band and one of the best folk bands I’ve ever heard. We saw them at the Jolly Roger Restaurant on the harbor dock.

Another year and another great vacation.......

The Summer of Aunt Blanche

I could probably write 100 blog posts about all that has happened in life since I last wrote 5 months ago in February: The Wedding of the Hospitality Manager and her Engineer in April and all the precious moments surrounding it, the advent of a son in the family, the life and times of a woman (me) sandwiched between 2 generations, the loss of The Golden Retriever for 24 hours (which almost broke my heart but strengthened my faith), 2 visits to Ocracoke Island during this time frame, another visit to Hatteras (where I currently am) for my hubby’s family’s 15th annual beach trip, my new hobby as a Beek (beekeeper); I could go on and on. And all of these things have been completely enwrapped, enfolded, surrounded, enveloped, cradled, covered, encompassed, hemmed in, hugged (you get the picture, and thank you, Roget) in God’s precious grace which I have written about time and time again.   But perhaps the most purposeful and meaningful activity I’ve had is the time I’m spending with Aunt

Happy 2nd Anniversary

I just realized today’s date.  It was two years ago this past Saturday, that we closed on 10 Cuttin Sage.  It was also two years ago today that Hurricane Sandy hit the Outer Banks.  Imagine what we were feeling when we had to evacuate an island where we had JUST closed on a house!  Our insurance hadn’t even kicked in yet!  It was a real exercise in faith because we knew that God had had His hand in all of it and we knew that He would carry us and Ocracoke through the storm.  We never worried because we put it in His great hands. This blog started as a marketing tool and has ended up a memoir of sorts about life, family, friendships, love of nature and God’s grace.  It has been said (I can’t remember who, perhaps Luther??) that the heart is an idol factory.  My love for a cottage on Ocracoke is not about an idol in my life, but a gift from God to bless people, a means for good stewardship, and a way to glorify Him, which I can do in a blog.  So here’s to His glory and the fact that He

Nearing the End

Today I went shopping for the last few items needed to stock our beach cottage.  I was almost sad as I considered that we’re nearing the end of this project.  Even though we’re starting a new chapter of being vacation home-owners, the planning and design process is nearing an end.   We now have renters booked for 8 weeks this summer!  If we get 4 more, my husband says that we will have made a successful investment the first year already!!!  What have I learned in all of this? That I really love doing this. If we can make a “go” of this investment, I’m already thinking of the next one because I love to think ahead. The reality is, 10 Cuttin Sage won’t accomodate our family forever. We can go now and take our 2 daughters with 2 friends and fit very comfortably in the house.  After all, it sleeps 6. In the future, it will be 2 daughters with 2 husbands.  Someday there will be 2 daughters, 2 husbands, and grandbabies (hopefully and God willing)! Therefore we might have to have... 2 cott
