Part 2: A Ring

This is Part 2 of the previous post.  Last month, during that rainy September week that ended up causing unprecedented flooding up and down the east coast, we were at 10 Cuttin Sage tolerating the soaking rain and wind because we were anticipating and celebrating the gift of the engagement of our youngest daughter, The Hospitality Manager, to her fiancé, the Engineer.

6 weeks prior, in August, my hubby and I were privy to his secret plan of whisking her down to Ocracoke Island (her favorite place in the world), proposing under the Ocracoke Lighthouse, bringing her home to our cottage, and giving her a surprise party with all of her closest friends and family.  What a guy he is and how proud we are to be his future in-laws!

The Doer and I waited patiently all week from Saturday, Sept. 19th to Friday, Sept. 25th for the Big Event.  Our other daughter, The Teacher, took a day off school that Friday to drive down to 10 Cuttin Sage and the other best friends traveled far and wide (one from as far away as Massachusetts) to come to Ocracoke Island for one full day to celebrate an engagement! The rain poured, the wind blew, the ferry shut down for a day because of flooding roads, but the kids all made it and nothing took away from the joy of the celebration. We prayed for God in His grace to stop the rain long enough for her fiancé to propose and give her the ring on Friday afternoon, and long enough for everyone to make it safely home on Sunday. He answered our prayers.

We celebrated Friday night with a Low Country Boil, Bourbon/Brown Sugar-Soaked Spoon Cake and Molasses Ginger cookies. Saturday we fixed the kids breakfast, fed them Eduardo’s for lunch, and took them to Howard’s Pub for dinner to reward them for their long travels on a rain-soaked weekend.

We had a total of 9 people spread out in 10 Cuttin Sage and the Boathouse for 2 nights, ate like royalty, played games, watched movies and ate junk food the weekend long.  The weather couldn’t touch the joy of celebrating this young couple with their closest friends!

I witnessed love and friendship that knows no bounds.  I am truly humbled and thankful to God for the love of my family, friends, future mates and His provision in our lives.

2015 marks 15 years of memories on Ocracoke Island, this one being the pinnacle. As I’m now in the throes of wedding planning with my precious daughter, I cannot begin to express the love I have in my heart for Christ and his unfathomable love for unworthy me (First) in his sacrifice on the cross. As I reflect on the joys of these earthly gifts, imagine what awaits us in Eternity!!!!

Must post some photos:

I usually don’t post facial photos, so I cropped this to show “The Ring” and the Low Country Boil we ate Friday night.

The first evening my hubby and I spent watching TV in The Boathouse and I thought the sunset view out the window was beautiful. These sunset photos were obviously before the monsoon began!

This view was from Jolly Roger Restaurant which is a great place to eat and watch sunsets on Silver Lake Harbor.  I just realized that I already showed these photos in the last post.  Oh well, they’re so beautiful, why not see them again???

The weather cleared up a little to walk on the beach.

Becky, The Cat, celebrated with us!

Ahhhh, my happy place......thank you, Lord.

Boats, SmacNally’s, Music, and Growing

Another 2 weeks on Ocracoke Island in May-June and I am surely spoiled! We timed this logistically so that our first week covered Memorial Day weekend when our children would only have to sacrifice 4 vacation days instead of 5, and then covered the next week which covered the full weekend of the Ocrafolk Festival, an annual event that we were able to attend for the first time ever! We also hauled Big Fun (the brother-in-law’s boat) down to use for the 2 weeks there. Having a boat at 10 Cuttin Sage really is Big Fun! The men spent a huge portion of the week fishing and catching! I made sure I took a walk every morning to avoid blood clots (yes, I’m still on blood thinners, bummer, see last post). We probably spent an inordinate amount of time at SmacNally’s restaurant on the harbor. It’s just too good, and probably a health hazard, but hopefully the fried stuff is outweighed by the fresh catch in it! Fried oysters, shrimp, mahi, hush puppies, french fries........

Porches

Things have changed a lot during the last couple of years; some good, some not so good (e.g. a daughter’s wedding, a hurricane disaster, the loss of a pet)  but no change has been as dramatic (for me, that is) as the change of the last 5 months. Life, to wit, has been kind of a blur of activity for as long as I can remember where I blissfully involved myself in all kinds of righteous and dutiful and honorable activities so that I could consider myself a “productive member of society” even though I have not worked outside the home for many years. (A plight of the stay-at-home mom!) Volunteering my time in many capacities gave me something to do, made me feel important, and gave me opportunities to help others.  Now that we are in COVID Isolation, even though things have been taken away, something new has been added:  TIME  because volunteer work apparently is "non-essential".   So....... I have now gone from filling my time...

Peace

We were on the Island (The Doer and I) for 2 weeks at the end of September to beginning of October 2020.    We hauled my brother-in-law’s boat (named Big Fun) down for the 2 weeks and had the kids there the first week and then some good friends of many years there for the second week. There’s no need for details that have already been described in the blog numerous times before: wonderful food, sunsets, fishing, reading, relaxing, laughing, etc. I did a whole lot of sitting on porches (see past posts), reading, and watching scenery. I tried to get a few walks in at least the first week, but mostly sitting. In fact, I did so much sitting and relaxing that by Wednesday after we returned home, I found myself in the Emergency Room at our local hospital with blood clots so large that the doctors couldn’t believed I was still alive and walking around! Evidently, too much sitting still (also spent 2 days in the car traveling back because w...
