It’s All In a Name

I so love it when houses have names.  BUT I don’t care for corny names like “Fantasea”, “Seaduction”, or "Vitamin Sea”.  I’d like to find some of those beach house owners and ask “can you not think of anything more creative then ‘Island Daze’ or ‘Reel Lucky' or 'Seas the Moment’?  Is this all you can come up with for your real estate business venture????”

We’ve discussed changing the name of 10 Cuttin Sage. I mean, the name of the house is it’s address and that’s a little boring.  Here’s what we’ve come up with so far:

Are We There Yet?
Hull of a House
Sandy Cheeks
Bodo’s Retreat (a problem because Bodo, the Golden Retriever is not going back to the beach ever again)
Salmon Again?
The Tackle Box

Obviously, we can’t come up with anything better than anyone else.

I thought of the name “Dove Cottage” because mourning doves have a special significance for me. There is a dove that has nested outside my bedroom window for the past two springs. I love to hear her melancholy cooing in the mornings. I felt God sent her to me to remind me that He is always there, never changing. He often uses creatures in nature to speak to me to teach me things about Him. I think “Dove Cottage” is a great name for a small, quaint, gray cottage on an island canal.

So, of course, nobody else liked it.....

My redheaded younger daughter, who has a redheaded older sister and a redheaded mother (yes me, but I cheat now) thought of the name “Ginger Bred House”. Well, I just thought that was hilarious and very creative and I was ready to go out and have a sign made up but, of course, everyone else thought it was ......too corny.

On our previous trips to Ocracoke, before we bought our cottage, we stayed in “Morningstar Cottage” and one year, in “Dad’s Retreat”. In fact, we stayed in Dad’s Retreat with my dad the last time we ever went to the beach with him before he passed away.  Delightful name and great memories!

I guess it’s best to just keep things the way they are. After all, we don’t want to lose renters over a name change. And then how in the world can a family of 4 (3 of them women) ever agree on a name???????

Porches

Things have changed a lot during the last couple of years; some good, some not so good (e.g. a daughter’s wedding, a hurricane disaster, the loss of a pet)  but no change has been as dramatic (for me, that is) as the change of the last 5 months. Life, to wit, has been kind of a blur of activity for as long as I can remember where I blissfully involved myself in all kinds of righteous and dutiful and honorable activities so that I could consider myself a “productive member of society” even though I have not worked outside the home for many years. (A plight of the stay-at-home mom!) Volunteering my time in many capacities gave me something to do, made me feel important, and gave me opportunities to help others.  Now that we are in COVID Isolation, even though things have been taken away, something new has been added:  TIME  because volunteer work apparently is "non-essential".   So....... I have now gone from filling my time...

Boats, SmacNally’s, Music, and Growing

Another 2 weeks on Ocracoke Island in May-June and I am surely spoiled! We timed this logistically so that our first week covered Memorial Day weekend when our children would only have to sacrifice 4 vacation days instead of 5, and then covered the next week which covered the full weekend of the Ocrafolk Festival, an annual event that we were able to attend for the first time ever! We also hauled Big Fun (the brother-in-law’s boat) down to use for the 2 weeks there. Having a boat at 10 Cuttin Sage really is Big Fun! The men spent a huge portion of the week fishing and catching! I made sure I took a walk every morning to avoid blood clots (yes, I’m still on blood thinners, bummer, see last post). We probably spent an inordinate amount of time at SmacNally’s restaurant on the harbor. It’s just too good, and probably a health hazard, but hopefully the fried stuff is outweighed by the fresh catch in it! Fried oysters, shrimp, mahi, hush puppies, french fries........

Blunders, Sunsets and College Memories

First an apology to my ornithologist friends out there who might be (but probably aren't) reading this blog.  Anywhere you've seen the word "heron", please substitute the word "egret".  I have admitted my inadequacies in photography, history, and measuring distances. Now I admit that I know nothing about birds and bird watching.  I thought an egret was a heron. The problem with a blog is that eventually a person's ignorance is bound to come out with a blunder somewhere.  Anyway, the beautiful white birds with long, graceful necks that look like a cross between a swan and a flamingo are egrets and are prevalent in the marsh grasses behind our house. I'll include a photo of them soon! Last month, I visited the island again; this time with my college roommate and dear friend for many years, a reconnection that was years overdue. That's one of the beautiful things about the empty nest. You can travel in September!  We spent our days drinking coffee ...
